 The gladiators, were recruited between the prisoner's war, slaves, freedmen
and also volontueers; their training was
teached in provided schools, under a teacher's guide and their service was
established for a determinated period,and when it finished,who gave a good
trial was repayed with the present of a honor's stick and, if he was a slave, won
the freedom.
The gladiators were divided into 4 groups:
Galli, that brought a sword,a little shield and a
helmet covered with a fish figure;
Sanniti including secutores,
and hoplomachi, characterized by a heavy armour and a long shield;
Reziari had a trident and a net to roll up the enemy
and a shut belt;
Traci, had a bent dagger , a round shield,and many
brassards.
The gladiators used to fight one by one or in group,or against savages
animals.Durino the republic many spectacles took place in the forum;but the
major part of them took place in the amphitheatre. Before the fightings,the
gladiators used to say goodbye to the emperor: Ave Caesar, Morituri Te Salutant
("Hail Caesar, who's saying you goodbye is going to die").
By the
end of the fight who lost standed up his left arm to ask the grace,instead the
winner asked the spectators that,throw conventional signs (thumb raised or
down), he could to accept or to refuse. The winner received a lot of prices.
