The Triclinium Print

triclinium "Triclinium" was the roman dining room. It was constituted by sofa where the guests and the hosts used to lay down, and by a table.Sofas or beds were called, from right to left, lectus summus, medius, imus.

Sofas were covered by cushions and on each one could lay down 3 people. The best dining rooms were so big that even 3 or 4 tables for 9 people each one could stay in the room.

During the meals, because the fork's use wasn't adopted and they used the fingers, roman people washed their hands with fresh water and sweet-smelling oils.  The romans laid down on beds, leant on a one's elbows and   eating with the right hand. The women started to participate to the meals only in the republican period but they can't be drunk to protect their shame.
