In the ancient Rome, the roman citizen used to cook the meals by himself while during the imperial Rome, many people had a real kitchen and 2 or3 slaves that cooked for them. In the imperial Rome already existed a search for a whole some food.

Daily three meals were consumed.
When in the morning the roman citizen woke up, he ate a natural meal,eating also the left-overs of previous evening.

 It was the breakfast time (ientaculum) where the roman people used to eat bread with salt, raisins, olives and cheese. During the lunch time (prandium), they used to eat  fast meal outside their house, usually in taverns.

The dinner was the moment where the meal was more elaborated. It started in the afternoon(15.30/16:00), after the thermal baths.

The dinner (coena) started with an hors d'oeuvre (gustus), usually with vegetables, and the first course (primae mensae)  was full of dishes with meat or fish.The sweets (secundae mensae) with fresh fruit concluded the dinner. Everybody used to drink wine.
